The Uman Hospitality Center was established a number of years ago by a group of warm-hearted individuals who wanted to help the tens of thousands of people who respond to the call of Rabbi Nachman of Breslev. The Rebbe commanded people to come to the holy town of Uman on Rosh Hashanah every year, so people travel from all corners of the globe to enjoy the special atmosphere on the Chag.
For years there was no real solution to the problem of providing kosher food. While the number of people coming to Uman every year keeps growing, Baruch Hashem, the poor Ukrainian infrastructure cannot keep up with their needs. A group of sponsors decided to set up a large Hospitality Center to overcome the problem. They invested capital and considerable energy to sort out all the details, including buying, transporting and storing the food and supplies from all over the world. Thanks to their efforts, everyone in the holy community of Uman can enjoy festive meals on Rosh Hashanah and the days before the Chag in happiness and joy, and especially with peace of mind!!
One major consideration for this giant project is the kashrut of the meals. The Hospitality Center has a team of Mashgichim under the Mehadrin Kashrut of Rabbi Mordechai Gross shlita. They oversee all the food operations, from preparation of the raw ingredients to serving hot meals in Uman’s communal dining halls on Rosh Hashanah.
No one who comes to Uman for Rosh Hashanah to daven at the holy tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslev should miss out on visiting the Hospitality Center at the top of Foskina Street. The beautiful meals served during Rosh Hashanah, and on the days before the Chag, are as tasty and nutritious as home-made food, while maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness. Of course, our goal is to provide a Rosh Hashanah feast as good as home-cooked food, so that people can fulfill the custom to eat sumptuously on Rosh Hashanah, as it says: “Go with happiness to eat bread, and drink with a good heart. Eat and drink sweet delicacies so that Hashem’s joy is strengthened.” (Nechemia)
The Rebbe Maharan HaKodesh says about Rosh Hashanah:
“Rosh Hashanah for me is above everything else. It is a wonder to me that those who are close to me and believe in me do not encourage everyone without exception to come up to Uman, because Rosh Hashanah is everything to me.”
He was particular to emphasize that anyone who moves towards his ideas and becomes close to him, should spend Rosh Hashanah with him; no one should be absent. Anyone who merits to be there for Rosh Hashanah will deserve great happiness. “Eat and drink sweet delicacies so that Hashem’s joy is strengthened.”
